AHEC Career Enhancement Scholars
Equipping Students for success in the health care industry!

ACES is a comprehensive program that includes:
  • A yearly Individual Career Planning session with AHEC staff that enables students to identify career options, plan for college and health professions training, etc.
  • Hands-on enrichment activities, field trips to colleges and university health-professions training programs.Access to online learning modules.
  • Assistance with shadowing and/or volunteering in health facilities.
Students participating in ACES will have:
  • An increased awareness of a variety of healthcare careers.
  • More focus towards their career goals.
  • Preparation for degree training in their chosen health career field.

Students applying to ACES should:
  • Display a strong interest in health care career exploration.
  • Seek extracurricular experiences that help them achieve their health career goals.
  • Demonstrate parental support to attend activities.
  • Have access to high speed internet at home, school or in the community
  • Show commitment to program expectations.
  • Care about their community and the needs of underserved and rural Missourians.
The cost to participate in ACES is a $25 enrollment fee per year.  This includes a one-on-one career planning session and access to hands-on workshops and online modules for a reduced participation fee.  Most events cost $20-60 depending on the event and the length of time involved.  ACES students are also contacted throughout the year with information on scholarships, summer camps and interships, and provided with assistance meeting health professionals, identifying volunteer and shadowing opportunities, and much more!

Nineteen metro students attended the AHEC "Jumpstart Your Health Career" workshop on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at UMKC School of Nursing. The six-hour workshop introduced students to various careers in the health field, provided HIPAA and confidentiality training, and offered students an interactive learning session on vital signs. UMKC School of nursing faculty members Ronda Manney, RN, MSN, and Teresa Croweder, RN, BSN, along with nursing student and former ACES participant Markie Greenway, led the activities. Students learned about blood pressures, temperatures, sterilization, respiration and pain levels. Following the activities, students also had an opportunity to visit the UMKC nursing simulation lab.
